What is Advanced Surgery?

Advanced surgery is a term used to describe modern and innovative surgical techniques developed to provide maximum surgical precision with minimal downtime and discomfort for patients. This type of surgery uses advanced medical equipment, technology, and surgical methods to perform complex procedures more efficiently while treating severe medical conditions such as hiatal hernia, GERD, and gallstones.

Hiatal Hernia Surgery

A hiatal hernia is an anatomical abnormality in which part of the stomach bulges into the chest cavity through an opening in the diaphragm. This can cause a weakening of the lower esophageal sphincter (LES), which generally keeps stomach acid in its place.
Heartburn is a burning sensation in the chest and throat after eating.

When this sphincter cannot tighten properly, acid can reflux into the esophagus and cause:

  • Nausea
  • Regurgitation
  • Bloating
  • Abdominal or chest pain
  • Heartburn

Other symptoms of heartburn include:

  • An acidic or bitter taste in the mouth
  • Nausea
  • Bloating
  • Burping
  • Feeling full quickly

Factors that trigger heartburn as they relax the lower esophageal sphincter include the following:

  • Aging
  • Obesity
  • Smoking
  • Caffeine
  • Alcohol
  • Chocolate
  • Tomato products
  • Citrus fruits
  • Eating large meals
  • Lying down too soon after eating

Gallbladder Surgery

The gallbladder is a small organ that stores bile, which helps with digestion. Gallstones can form in the gallbladder and cause pain and other symptoms. Gallbladder removal surgery, or cholecystectomy, may be needed to remove the gallbladder if it becomes inflamed or infected. Your surgeon will make several small incisions in the upper abdomen during the procedure, using laparoscopy to remove the gallbladder. Ideal gallbladder surgery candidates have symptomatic gallstones or other gallbladder-related issues. Recovery time varies, but most patients can return to their routine within two weeks. During this time, following our aftercare instructions is critical to ensure a successful recovery.

Anti-Reflux Surgery

GERD, or gastroesophageal reflux disease, is also known as acid reflux. Muscle weakness between the esophagus and stomach allows food or stomach acid to move from the stomach up to the esophagus. This is called reflux, and it causes heartburn and chest discomfort. Las Vegas Bariatrics proudly offers patients acid reflux treatment in Las Vegas and Spring Valley through our anti-reflux surgery.
Nissen Fundoplication, or anti-reflux surgery, can reduce the frequency of heartburn and other symptoms associated with GERD. The minimally invasive procedure takes approximately one hour and tightens the junction between the esophagus and the stomach. Anti-reflux surgery is a safe operation frequently paired with hiatal hernia repair, and patients generally return home on the same day of surgery.

Patients with severe GERD may benefit from anti-reflux surgery. Ideal candidates:

  • Have persistent symptoms or develop complications despite various other treatments
  • Experience lack of results from other treatments or side effects from medications
  • Have complications from GERD such as advanced esophagitis, peptic esophageal stricture, or Barrett's esophagus
  • Cannot tolerate proton pump inhibitor (PPI) therapy, or their non-acid reflux and symptoms persist while on PPI therapy

You may experience residual reflux symptoms requiring you to continue anti-reflux medication after surgery.

Additionally, recurrence is possible, meaning some patients will need another operation to treat new reflux symptoms. Recurrence happens when:

  • The stomach was wrapped around the esophagus too tightly
  • The wrap loosens
  • A new hiatal hernia develops
