Studies show improvement in heart disease after Bariatric Surgery, for Weight Loss.

In attempt to learn if heart disease after bariatric surgery gets better or worse a study was done in the Health Care Systems Research Network: Kaiser Permanente in Washington, Northern California and Southern California, and HealthPartners Institute in Minnesota it was determined people who were severely obese and had diabetes had 40 percent fewer heart attacks and strokes. Bariatric patients also had 67 percent fewer deaths — within 5 years after weight-loss surgery versus usual care, in large, long-term.

During the same period, those who had surgery were also more than one-third less likely to develop heart disease after bariatric surgery— and two-thirds less likely to die from any cause. These findings are important because about 30 million — more than 9 percent of adult Americans — have type 2 diabetes, according to the American Diabetes Association.

With time, the disease tends to worsen, raising the risks of diseases of the large blood vessels (heart attack, stroke and heart disease) and of death. About 1 in 3 people with type 2 diabetes have a body mass index (BMI) of at least 35 kg/m2, and according to National Institutes of Health guidelines, the disease plus that degree of obesity makes them eligible for bariatric surgery.

Bariatric surgery includes different operations that help people lose weight by making changes to their digestive system using surgery.  Members of the same research team had shown that diabetes goes into long-term remission (for an average of 7 years) for about half of people who undergo gastric bypass, one of the most common bariatric procedures.

Improving heart disease after bariatric surgery is just one health benefit.  Bariatric surgery is known to help other health issues and diseases such as sleep apnea and lower the risk of death from cancer. Having weight loss surgery is a life style change that requires you to alter your diet and make better health based decisions on what you consume on a daily basis. It it also highly recommended for bariatric patient to take bariatric vitamin supplements and meal replacement shakes in order to help maintain optimal health and results.

After weight loss surgery patients will meet with the licensed bariatric dietitian to to create a meal plan specifically for recovery and long-term health and wellness.  Patients with medical issues such as heart disease after bariatric surgery should bring it up to the dietitian in order to alter the meal plan to meet each patients specific health requirements.

After bariatric surgery patients will have periodic check-ups with a physician in order to monitor weight loss or things like heart disease after bariatric surgery and address any other questions or concerns. These checkups will continue post bariatric surgery typically up to a year after surgery.
