At Las Vegas Bariatrics, we are committed to providing patients with excellence in bariatric surgery and services. Our mission to redefine surgical weight loss compels us to exclusively offer surgical procedures and programs that will be beneficial, safe, and effective for our patients. As such, Dr. Bernie Hanna no longer performs laparoscopic gastric band procedures, commonly known as lap band surgery. Instead, Dr. Hanna offers patients the Gastric Sleeve minimally invasive procedure.
Once one of the most commonly performed bariatric surgery procedures, lap band surgery has seen a significant national decline over the last 8 years. In 2011, lap band surgeries made up approximately 35 percent of procedures performed. By 2015, that number had dropped to under six percent.
Through lap band surgery, an adjustable band is placed around the upper portion of the stomach in order to create a smaller pouch that helps to restrict the amount of food the stomach is able to hold and consequently limiting the amount of food a person eats as they feel fuller sooner. When the procedure was first introduced it seemed to provide a safe and effective option for weight loss surgery. Not only was the procedure reversible, it also did not involve cutting the stomach nor did it affect the intestines. However, over the years an increasing number of patients have reported medical complications requiring additional surgeries.
Long-term research combined with increasing numbers of complications resulting from the procedure has contributed to the decline of the once popular gastric band procedure. Sadly, a growing number of patients reported medical problems resulting from the procedure, while others were forced to undergo an additional procedure in order to fix, replace, or remove the band, and others even reported needing to undergo another weight loss surgery to help them achieve results.
Studies have also shown that lap band surgery does not create the physiological changes that help patients to lose weight and then maintain a healthier weight long-term. Patients feel the same level of hunger, but are not able to eat the same amount of food causing significant discomfort. Patients have also reported extreme discomfort from eating certain foods, which in turn led them to consume higher calorie foods simply to avoid some pain. Research has also found that lap band patients lose significantly less weight than patients who undergo other procedures such as gastric bypass or gastric sleeve.
Due to the mounting number of complications and research that shows the potential danger in a lap band procedure, Dr. Bernie Hanna has decided to no longer offer the procedure at his Bariatric Center Of Excellence in Las Vegas, Nevada. While Dr. Hanna has performed numerous successful lap band procedures for patients, his commitment to excellence in providing only the safest and most effective weight loss surgery solutions led to the decision to phase out the procedure.
Instead, Dr. Hanna highly recommends Sleeve Gastrectomy, commonly known as a Gastric Sleeve procedure. The gastric sleeve procedure is minimally invasive, takes less than an hour to perform, and delivers significant results. During the procedure, Dr. Hanna creates a smaller stomach pouch that limits the amount of food a person can eat, but it also eliminates a portion of the hunger hormone Grehlin causing a decrease in appetite. In this procedure, there are no foreign items introduced into the body and the intestines are not rerouted and food passes through the digestive tract in the usual manner allowing for normal digestion.
Gastric sleeve surgery provides patients with a low maintenance yet highly effective weight loss surgery option with less long-term problems than the lap band counterpart. It can offer quick weight loss opportunities along with a low rate of side effects.
